Manzanita Parrot Stands - Java Bird Stands - Parrot Play Gyms

Bird Gym
Wood Parrot stands can be purchase in a variety of wood types and styles. The use of natural branches and tree limbs that make up most of these bird stands guarantees no two stands will be exactly alike. Popular woods being used to build these stands and play gyms include manzanita wood, java wood, dragon wood, grape wood (grape vine) and ribbon wood. Some woods are offered sand blasted to add grip to an otherwise slippery outer surface, such as natural manzanita wood. In the case of manzanita, sandblasting the wood not only adds some texture, it also removes most native debris from the wood, such as wild bird droppings and lizard poop. It also helps the wood dry out evenly to prevent excess cracking (Most manzanita wood is harvested from live trees or bushes). Natural wood branches also provide variation in perch shape and diameter which promote a bird’s foot health.

Most of these natural wood parrot play stands offer a look and beauty that just can’t be found in a man-made, plastic bird stand or all metal parrot stands. There are a couple of drawbacks to wood parrot stands, however. Natural wood branches are not as easy to disinfect due to the naturally occurring cracks and crevices and the porous nature of wood when compared to plastic or metal. And for some parrot owners with aggressive chewing birds, even the toughest woods will get chewed up at some point. But this last issue is not necessarily a negative. Providing wood to chew on is often a great way to keep many parrots happy and content. If you're housing a big chewer, like a macaw, and have a workshop available, homemade parrot play stands may be a cost effective consideration.
